How to Set & Track Goals Using Your Planner & Evernote // Planner Addict

This post is for those of you who love planners & goal setting. As you guys know, I am big into both. I posted about my first ECLP 3 Months In, and 6 Months in, I also filmed a companion video tour of my planner and I saw that you guys were interested in this post. So here we go, feel free to ask questions if I leave something out! :)

I made a youtube video to explain this process, feel free to read/watch or both. I'm a visual person, so I figured I would get some videos into the world for other folks who are too. :)

Evernote:

The first thing I do when I make a list of goals, is stick it into Evernote. It's a program that you are probably familiar with, but it keeps little stacks of editable/sort-able notes in one place. You can keep the program on two devices and access it online anytime. I keep Evernote on my iphone and my computer. This way, I can ALWAYS see my goal lists. I like to use Evernote in combination with my paper planner - but it's also great because I can use it on-the-go... when I don't have my tote or planner with me. It also makes it easy to flip between one set of goals to the next. I have a lot, so it can be hard to keep track of!

Planner Set Up:

The way the vertical ECLP that I am using works has a specific set up, so I will share that first. You might have to adapt this method depending on how your planner is set up.

My planner has:
  • a spread for yearly goals in the front.
  • monthly spreads where you can view the whole month, with a small side bar for monthly goals.
  • a weekly spread that breaks up each day vertically into three sections. I divide these sections into "Brand" - blog and stationery brand, "Home" - chores and errands, and "Self" - personal goals and chores.
    • The weekly spread also has a left hand side bar that I use for my menu and a spot for a "thankful thought" - great for gratitude journaling.
    • The weekly spread also has blank lines below each day, that is where I add in anything that has a specific time, like an event, appointment, etc.
Paper Planners & Goal Setting:

Yearly:

When I make a list of yearly goals, I put it in the front of my planner. The ECLP I bought last year has a spot for yearly goals in the front, however, you could write yours out or print them and tape them into the front of your planner with washi tape. However works for you. :)

Monthly:

The next thing I do is break down my yearly goals into monthly ones. For example, in 2016 I want to read 50 books. So in January, I added a monthly goal to read 5 books. In my ECLP there is a spot for monthly goals on the month overview page. However, if your planner doesn't have a spot for this, feel free to add in a page with tape, or go straight to writing them on a weekly page. Repeat with each goal. Sometimes my monthly goals are not related directly to my yearly ones, but are other things that I really want to get done. Like a cleaning or organizing project, or planning out a future trip. I add these in at the same time - generally at the end of the previous month.

At this time I also write in any birthdays, events, vacations, etc. into the monthly format. Because one of my goals often relates to movies, dates, concerts, etc. etc. If it is already planned I might write it on the page in ink - or add a sticker. For travel I like to use strips of washi tape to mark off the days on my monthly view. I also look at my FB saved events, and websites for theaters, etc. and place a post-it note in the monthly pages of my calendar to mark an event we *might* go to. The post-it includes, title, location, time, time range (if it runs for a week, etc.), and price if I can find it. - that way I have all of the info. KC and I (or sometimes just I) narrow down those post-its and buy tickets for things that we really want to go to. Sometimes we have to narrow more than others, and recently we've been trying to plan only one event per weekend on our own, because we know we'll end up spending time with family or friends - or both! This keeps us from being so busy. However, things tend to be clumped, for whatever reason there is always quite a bit happening at the same time, and nothing happening at other times... and so it goes.

I also mark our pay days as well. This is helpful in general, but also for goals related to making bigger purchases or extra purchases. For example, I had a goal to buy new bras every month in the first few months of the year. Knowing when we would be paid helped me to order them at a good time.

Weekly:

When I add planned events (not possible ones) to my monthly spreads, I also add them to my weekly spreads. I write those events (including time and place) on the lines below my vertical daily section. That way I never forget because I wasn't looking at the monthly page. I also will add them in as needed, it's not always done way in advance. I also add washi tape for vacation days over the full three sections of the vertical weekly spread for each day I will be gone. I don't schedule out vacation activities in my planner, I just block those days off. I shouldn't be blogging, working, or worrying about chores when I am on vacation. For events that are re-curring or planned for just that week, like a dinner with a friend, or KC's "guys night" - I also write those in on the blank lines.

At the end / beginning of each week I look through my monthly goals and try to place them into my weekly page. For example, if I have a goal to send out a birthday gift for my dad, I go into my planner and add to pick it out several weeks in advance, package it up a week in advance, and send it - all within time for it to get to him.

Other goals, like reading 5 books per month are put into my weekly format in a simpler way. I just write "read" in my "self" section of my vertical ECLP daily. That way I am reminded to read daily. I also track my goal completion/progress in my planner which helps as a motivator. (more on that later).

For goals like trying 5 new recipes within a month, I try to put those into a blank side column where I keep my menu notes. I write out each day of the week for lunch and dinner and then fill in the blanks. This also helps me keep on top of knowing when we'll need more food or what night will be good to go out to eat. We typically try to plan going out to eat around other evening activities on the weekly schedule. If we need to get a second set of groceries later on in the week, I also write that in on my weekly schedule under the "home" section of my vertical ECLP where needed.

There are a few things that I write onto my weekly spread under the "self" section every day. I write "Read. Create. Move. Floss" - so I remember to do those things - or can track easily which days I did not do those things. I just cross them off as I complete them. If you use a cleaning schedule or schedule out when to pay bills, etc. etc. you could easily add those into your weekly spreads in advance.

Paper Planners & Goal Tracking:

So you know how I set up my goals, but here's a bit more on how I visually track them. It definitely helps me to see my progress as I flip through my planner!

I obviously cross out or check off goals that I have finished within the yearly and monthly goal formats. I check them off on the daily sections as well like a to-do list. But there are other ways I track my goals in my planner too.

When I don't meet a goal, or I need to move it to the next month I mark that on my monthly goals by putting a "N" for "Next Month" or a marker of progress in the box instead of a check mark. For example, if I wanted to plan out a trip in advance, but didn't make it, then I might put in an "N" for "Next Month." In which case, I then go ahead and write it down on the next month's goal area - even if it's not time to set all of the goals for the next month yet. If I had a goal to read 5 books, but only read 4, I might put a 4 in the check box instead of a check. Did I complete it? No. But seeing something there helps me look back on how close I got, and what I DID achieve. You could use any sort of color coding, symbol coding (ala bullet journal), etc. to code these types of things. Whatever works for you!

Another thing I do to show my progress is to mark things that I have finished/done in my weekly pages. For example, if I finished a book on a given day, I mark that into my "self" section of my vertical ECLP or below that. Ex: "Finished Dumplin'" This way I can easily see while flipping through that I finished a book on that week/day. I do the same thing for my goal about watching Disney movies.

For menu planning and cooking goals specifically, I use the left hand blank space for my menu, and below that I make another box that says "New Recipes" - I write the ones from the menu that are new in the new box, and continue that total weekly at the bottom to see how close I am getting to my goal for the year.

For workouts and healthy eating I mostly just add little notes on my daily spread. Under the "self" section of the vertical layout next to "Move" I put what exercise I did and how many minutes next to it. I often circle it so it's easy to see. Other times I put notes to myself like, "No soda today!" etc. You could use the sections to write in little circles that represent cups of water and check them off as you drink them, whatever works for you and whatever you are wanting to track.

The last way that I track goals in my planner is by utilizing the blank pages at the end of each month and also at the end of the planner itself. Things I have used those pages for:
  • checklists and ideas for KC's bday week
  • random notes
  • books I have read so far this year
  • book challenges and my picks for them - which I check off as I finish
  • keeping track of my "book ban" progress - more on that later
  • lists of books I've been meaning to read - for when I need an idea
  • lists of shows to start watching & catch up on with KC - by genre
  • ideas for food when people come over - just in case!
  • I also keep addresses in the back of my planner. If someone moves I add a post-it with the new address until I know what it will be long-term.
  • I keep track of the new things I have tried each month - new foods, experiences, etc. etc.
I think the longer I use this, and the more time I have to continue organization within my life and goals, the more things I will use my planner to track. Up ahead I am hoping to focus more on cleaning schedules and all things healthy living within my planner.

Bottom Line:

Use your planner in a way that works for you, and track the things that you care about. If you don't have a goal to read, you don't need to track your books, etc. Don't use it for things you don't care about. Make what you have work for you! It doesn't have to be expensive, extensive, fancy, pretty, etc. It just needs to be what works for you. If you can write in sections of a $5 planner and have the space to track what you want to, do it! :)

Whew! This is the longest post in existence... but it should give you a good and specific idea of how I use my planner, how I keep it organized, and how I create and track my goals within my planner. I hope that this helps some of you and gives you ideas on how to use yours.

Do you have any questions?

Did I miss anything?

How do you track your goals in your planner?! I'd love to know!

Any new strategies you are trying for 2017?

Where to begin.... ? // Goal Setting for 2014

I'm a goal setter. Always have been. Always will be. But it can be tough! How to decide what you want to accomplish in a year? How to set yourself up for success? How to evaluate your past goal success/ failure?

Every year I think I know what I want and what works best, and right at the end I realize that every year is different for a reason. And all of them are wonderful! Even when you don't complete even 50% of your goals.. you probably still accomplished more than you realized.

I'm in the process of working on my goals for 2014... so in the meantime here is a great pin I found that is inspiring my outlook on my goals for 2014 & some links to previous posts featuring goal setting tips and some of my past goals.

I could not find the original source for this image, but I think it is great. It really helps to make your goals diverse and all-encompassing! I usually like to pick more than one book for example, but it's a good place to start thinking!

2012 Goal Review

A good way to keep track of your goals and progress is to revisit them at the end of the indicated time and evaluate your progress. So I have decided to revisit my 2012 resolutions to track my progress in goal setting!

When you do this, remember that it is often just as important to celebrate the small steps toward a goal & goals you don't want to complete as it is to check things off of your list.

Here we go!

1) Try 100 new recipes
This goal was my BHAG {big hairy audacious goal} and I was really motivated/scared by it! I was SO happy that I was able to complete it, just before midnight on New Year's Eve! I have so far posted all but 6 of the recipes to this blog. I should have them up fairly soon! I will also post my top 12 recipes of the year and my cookbook reviews coming up soon! Through the process I found some really good and really bad recipes! I am happy to say that most were pretty darn good. I definitely found some new favorites, which was the goal. Through this process I feel like a fairly accomplished home cook! :) I've got new skills! I hope you are enjoying the recipes that I have shared so far, and enjoy the last few that have yet to be added! {there are some GREAT ones left! :)}

2) obtain and sustain the life of 3 new plants
Completed/failed: Depends on how you look at it. Kyle bought me an ivy topiary in February and then at the end of March we bought 7 herbs and planted them. The ivy is still alive and the herbs lasted through most of the summer. It was a dreadfully hot summer here, so that was not ideal for growing anything. So because herbs aren't meant to live year-round, {at least most} this is sort of a pass. This year I made a goal to buy 3 house plants. Which is a better goal I think.

3) read 20 books {one more than I finished in 2011}
I realized around Christmas time that I needed to read 2 more books. Luckily I picked The Giver and my sister-in-law Kelsey had the companion Gathering Blue. I was able to read each of those very quickly! I was proud that I knocked 2 more classics off of my list and one being the massive Anna Karenina. Favorites among the 20 were: The Host By: Stephene Meyer, Persuasion By: Jane Austen, Elixir By: Hilary Duff, Water for Elephants By: Sara Gruen, Anna Karenina By: Leo Tolstoy and The Giver books By: Lois Lowery.

4) make a miller scrapbook
I was severely behind on this goal until the last week of March when I went into a scrapbooking frenzy! I have HUNDREDS of pictures from my 2 1/2 years at Miller and its proving to be quite the project! So far I have filled up the pages the scrapbook came with and made one page beyond that! Still more to go, but I think I am about halfway done! I loved this goal, it was a wonderful creative outlet! I am excited to finish it and start more for other subjects :)

5) go to 5 new places
Completed! Our honeymoon in January took us to Quebec, Canada, It put me on a plane, Our spring break road trip then took us to 5 cities in Texas! Then we went to Tulsa in April and Minneapolis/St. Paul in August! We were busy travelers! :)

6) find eco-friendly hair products that I like
I have been trying out shampoos and conditioners.. but haven't found any great ones for my hair yet. Looking into doing simple vinegar rinses.. but I am not a huge fan of vinegar! :) I found a wonderful hair cream to use after I wash my hair that works great and smells like a tropical paradise, without the chemical fragrance! I will post about it at some point. So this was a small success! :)

7) compost!

Completed/Failed: Depends on how you look at this, we realized that there really isn't a good way for us to compost in our tiny apartment with no yard. So we started and then had to quit. There wasn't anywhere to put our food scraps. We are looking forward to having our own home someday where we can compost, or joining a community that has its own compost area.

8) become a merc member

We did not do this. We couldn't decide if it was the best move. Even though it isn't in our 2013 list.. we might continue to weigh our options. :)

9) use daily feats consistently
In the beginning I did pretty well on this goal. I was interviewed by daily feats and did a lot of phone interviews for improving their website. It was fun to help them out :) I downloaded the app when I got my iphone but I have so many feats saved that it takes FOREVER to load. So I need to really do that on the computer instead. So this is a fail, but I still managed to donate quite a bit of money to Companions to Heroes. :)

10) blog at least 3 times per month

I managed to blog at least 3 times every month except for August. Which makes sense. August is busy with the start of school. I made this goal more for the overall number of posts than the monthly ones so it worked out the way I wanted it to. I posted over the number of times expected this year even though I didn't post 3 times in August. Thank you for reading!!! :)

11) shop at the farmer's market regularly
We visited the farmer's market 3 times this season (April-October) this is by no means regularly, but much more than we would have gone otherwise. So I consider this a small success.

12) explore local parks and nature trails
Kyle and I visited the McGrew nature trail off of 15th street in Lawrence. It was nice for the neighborhood, but not really very outdoorsy. Many more to see though! I didn't get very far on this goal, but I still consider it a pass because I would have seen zero had this not been on my list. :)

13) get into a yoga routine with kyle

We had a few weeks or so where we did really well, but it was on and off so not at all completed. The problem was that I didn't specifically lay out a goal for our routine. So it wasn't set up to be completed. This year's goal is much better. But through trying to complete this goal we did accomplish important things like getting 2 air conditioner units and re-arrange our living room countless times. Now we finally have a decent set up where there is room to do yoga on the floor! This is a pretty darn great thing, even if I didn't accomplish what I wanted to initially.

So I felt like I "completed" or made significant progress on 9 out of 12 goals! Really not bad!

Other Accomplishments in 2012:

Got an A++ in my internship hours!
Gained over 30,000 blog views on this blog! {thanks for reading!}
Finished Anna Karenina!! :)

BEAT my travel goal!
Checked a few things off of my 10 year list! {also coming soon!}

7 Tips for Goal Setting Success!

Happy 2013! Here is a little guide of tips on goal setting that I put together.

These are tips that I use personally that help me achieve the goals that I set. Many I have read, others I have just determined work for me as I set more goals.

I hope that these help you set fun and challenging goals for 2013!

Tips for Success in Goal Setting:

1) Make fun goals! - Don't think that because it is the beginning of January that your goals have to be all about saving money, losing weight and de-cluttering! If those are some of your goals, great! If not, that's great too! The best way I have found to set goals myself is to mix the fun in with the more tedious ones. That way I get a good mix and feel accomplished in multiple ways at the end of the year. You aren't going to want to accomplish your goals if you aren't excited about them.

2) Make your goals specific & measurable - Making a goal like, "exercise more," "save money," or "read more books," is setting you up to fail. When setting a goal, think about where you are now for the goal and where you want to end up. Be as specific as possible. For example: "read more books" - how many books did you read last year? how many books would you like to read this year? Is it a feasible number? Is it ambitious enough to be motivating? What types of books do you want to read? When do you want to complete the goal by? How will I know if I completed my goal?

Your new improved goal might look something like this: "By January 2014, read 7 books, 2 of which are biographies and 2 of which are travel books."

3) Write goals as if you know you can complete them- This gives you the confidence of feeling like there is no question of your capabilities each time you read it. For example, the improved goal above about reading becomes even better when it is specific & measurable as well as written with confidence. The new goal would look something like: "By January 2014 I have read 7 books. 2 of which are biographies and 2 are travel books."

4) Be Ambitious!- Lululemon Athletica, a encourages their employees, blog readers & customers to set what they call BHAGs. Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals. We are competitive and we like to improve ourselves. Giving yourself a little bit of a challenge is very motivating and exciting. Last year, I could have very easily set a goal to make 50 new recipes in a year. That could have been a challenge, but 100 was truly exciting! I'm so glad I pushed myself to do it! I was very motivated to finish it because it sounded so impressive.

5) Set a Mixture of end-point and on-going goals- I find that I do best with goal setting and achievement when I set some goals that have a definite end-point like, "see coldplay live in concert" and others that are on-going like, "floss 3 X's per week" If your entire list is on-going goals, you will probably wear yourself out and get stressed by trying to keep up with too many on-going habits at the same time. If you set only end-point goals then you might not feel very challenged. Picking a good mixture really helps me stay motivated and achieve more things in a period of time.

6) Start Small- Start with about 5 goals, especially if you are new to goal setting. I have started setting more and more as I have learned to identify what types of things I want to achieve and how I work best. You should be able to set a list that feels reasonable, but a little challenging to you. Don't overwhelm yourself with 50 big goals for a year the first time around.

7) Reflect on Your Goals, OFTEN- When you make your goals, make sure you revisit them monthly. Looking back at your goals helps keep you on track and excited about possibilities throughout the year/season etc. And at the end of the year make sure you see how you did. Did you set too many goals? Did you set too few? Were they all too similar? Evaluating your progress is a learning process. Don't be hard on yourself! Trying is half the battle! The courage to try something is often times much more important than achieving it. It is kind of like that quote "the journey is greater than the end destination." Post reviewing my 2012 goals, coming tomorrow! :)

Below I have added links to my goals for 2011, 2012 & 2013. Check them out for inspiration and examples of how it is hard to start out. My 2011 list is really unspecific and contains WAY too many things with not enough on-going/end-point variety. It might be helpful to get ideas, but it is a good example of how NOT to set goals, especially starting out!

Why it is NOT too late to make your 2013 goals!

1) Goals are much more about little steps than they are about big successes. Many people think that if they don't start right at January 1st or do something successfully every week during that they have failed. This is just not true! Small steps and victories are the best way to gain self confidence when it comes to goal setting!

2) Goals give you a reason to do something fun or something good for yourself! Many nights I sit around wondering what to do with my evening. When I have goals I can spend time working towards them instead of wasting hours of facebook. At the end of the year, even if I didn't finish my goal, I definitely made steps in the right direction & probably had lots of fun doing it!

Daily Feats: Helping People Do Good

One day while I was shopping on Gaiam.com I stumbled across an add for Daily Feats. I didn't know what it was but I signed up.. and haven't looked back since.

Daily Feats allows you to log your daily "good" activities and earn points on their website. You can check in and say that you took the stairs, spent time outside, read a book, volunteered, ate leafy greens etc. And earn points which you can save up to redeem for online gift cards from places like Starbucks, Fandango, iTunes and Barnes and Noble {just to name a few!}.

Not only can you redeem online gift cards but you can also donate your points to worthy charities!

I have found that this website keeps me accountable to do good things in my daily life and keep me on track with my goal setting! I will start logging and see something that makes me think "hmm I should really do yoga today" or "I should really make a menu for the week!". It definitely keeps me on track with healthy habits and goals. But it also rewards you for doing fun things too! Reading, Dancing, Singing, Hosting a Gathering etc. It is both a health and social reward system.

As you may have noticed using Daily Feats consistently is actually one of my 2012 resolutions! Summer was the perfect time to get on track! I log my feats every weekday now!

The first time I used my daily feats points I donated $10 to Millennium Promise and ~$50 to Companions for Heroes. Millennium Promise is a global organization that is working to reduce and eradicate hunger and poverty around the world. Companions for Heroes is an organization that works to pair shelter/rescue animals with veterans who need service or companion animals.

The second time I redeemed my points I received a $10 gift card to Gaiam.com.

The third time I redeemed my points I received a $10 Starbucks gift card.

The fourth time I redeemed my points I donated $165 to Companions for Heroes

This website is doing so many great things for the world!

1) Its helping people to achieve their goals.
2) Its encouraging people to do good things in their daily lives.
3) Its rewarding people for their good deeds.
4) Its allowing people to pass on their reward for doing good to do more good through charity donations.

This website is amazing. I would highly recommend it to everyone. It can help you achieve your goals, earn some gift cards and make donations to excellent charities!

Sign up for Daily Feats today!

Also for those lucky smart phone users out there, they do have an app! It makes it really easy for you to log as you go!

Please send me your feedback or stories about using Daily Feats as well as your questions!

All For Now,

Alexandra

The Day after I posted this I came across a Companions for Heroes Video. After watching this video I decided to donate another $100 to the cause with my Daily Feats points! It is such a wonderful organization! :) Check out the video:

*NOTE* I do not work for Daily Feats, nor am I being commissioned to write this post by them. I am blogging about it because it is something that I truly believe in. {wouldn't it be cool to work for them though?? :)}
