Happy Wednesday friends! What an interesting week it's turning out to be.... Hope you're enjoying yours! I realized I hadn't written a cat post in over a year... what?! So if you haven't met my furballs, click that link! :)
I know a lot of you have cats, and some of you have recently adopted cats... so I wanted to share some of our fool proof kitty toys, foods, and trouble-solving methods, etc.! If any of you have been reading here a long time, things like litter boxes, etc.* can be a challenge with multiple/difficult cats, and it's good to hear tips from other cat owners! I hope that this helps other cat moms out there! If you don't have cats, this won't be very interesting... sorry!. hehe :)
We feed our cats Blue Buffalo and they love it. I like that it doesn't contain any weird ingredients, or anything cats wouldn't eat on their own. We decided that the price was worth it for the ingredients, and it's easy to find coupons and sales for pet food! Here is what we buy most frequently!
Freedom Grain Free Dry Food (for indoor cats) - the wilderness kind was a bit too rich for them, they love this kind! This is their primary food.
Salmon Pate (Wet Food) - we just give them a spoonful each night when we have dinner. They only eat it squished down in the bowl. Is that normal?! LOL
Salmon Wilderness Treats - for Duchess, she looooves these wilderness treats.
Salmon Kitty Yums (Healthy Treats) - for Scalawag who does not like the wilderness treats, but will chase these across the room. :)
They do like other flavors, but tend to like Salmon and Trout most. :)
Food Tips:
-We noticed that Scali and Duchess like different treats, so we throw Scal's across the room, and then give Duchess hers to keep them separated. It's a fun game for him, and it doesn't scare her off.
-In addition to squishing the wet food down into the bowls, when it's time to open a new can, we save two days' worth of "old" food for Scali, and give Duchess "new" food. He won't eat the new stuff. Such a weirdo!
-We purchased a rolling pet food tub to pour the dry food into. Best. Decision. Ever. We have one like this, and we keep it in our pantry.
Right now we have two boxes, one with a lid and an opening, another that is completely open. We put each in different rooms so that way our cats have less issues bothering each other while they are in the box. #rude We use pine litter, and we LOVE it. I have heard so many awful things about clumping/scented/chemical litters and cancer, etc. that we decided to go with pine. We love it!
Open Box
Lidded Box
Pine Litter - we get the one without clumping/scents
Aura Cacia Lavender Oil for deodorizing spray (see "recipe" below in tips)
Litter Tips:
-Spray the pine litter with a mist of water from a spray bottle when you replace the entire box's contents of litter. That way it's not too hard/sharp on their little paws.
-Also, sweep often!
-Make a quick eco deodorizing room spray by filling an empty spray bottle (I use my old toner one! #reuse ) almost full with warm water, then add about 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Give it a shake and use as needed. It helps with kitty smells tremendously! I've been using this essential oil for years and I LOVE it.
A lot of people think that cats don't need toys, they just want to sleep and eat... but cats love toys, and they are super playful! They also tend to have better behavior the more they've been playing. However... toys are hit or miss. These are our cats' absolute favorites!!
The Cat Dancer - this toy is $2.99, buy like 4 of them. They're the simplest thing, but they love them so much! The metal wire and fun little paper rolls make them bug-like in movement and color. I am so surprised that our cardboard rolls are still intact after several years of use!! I know this doesn't *LOOK* cool, but I can promise you it's the coolest thing, the cats go crazy for it.
Da Bird - They go nuts for this one, I think it's the fishing-rod-like flexibility of the pole! I love that when the "bird" is looking sad, you can swap just the feather piece. I feel so wasteful throwing out the plastic one-piece items! DO NOT LEAVE THIS UNATTENDED! It will be in pieces!
Catit Circuit - This little track and ball kit is genius. You assemble the track, and the cats can chase the ball around (see, hear, touch it) and it seems reactive, because it's inside of the track. You can pull apart the track and put it into new shapes and designs (great husband toy! :P ) BE CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH YOUR FINGERS.. OUCH! We put this away and get it back out every now and then and they love it. Some friends have also tried this one with a lot of success!
Tunnels - Tunnels can be hit or miss, we love ones that are spring loaded! Scali just loves them. We sometimes make tiny obstacle courses across the living room. We have one from this brand (another color) and we just love it. It's holding up very well!
The Ripple Rug - we got this as a gift from my in-laws and the cats just love it. It's legitimately two sheets of thin carpet (the top one has velcro and holes in it). You can ripple up the top piece and the cats can form little tunnels. Ours love to play in it, and also when we hide toys in it or put a feather toy through it for them to chase or find. My only complaints about this one (because they love it SO SO SO SO SO SO SO much!) is that after a while the top layer of carpet loses some of it's stiffness, so it's more floppy, my cats don't like that quite as much. Also, it's kind of big... but it can be rolled up when company comes over.
Chewbacca "Mouse" - you guys... Scali is one of those cats that carries around babies... and you can throw them across the room and he'll go get them. He'll even throw them up in the air and catch them all by himself. He loooooves this Chewbacca. He couldn't care less about the Yoda though. LOL. We definitely bought like 3 of them! Gotta stock up on those favorites. His other favorite baby is this black cat (which we initially bought for Duchess to cuddle with...) he does the same with this as he does with Chewy.
Toy Tips:
-Cats get bored just like people. Put your toys on rotation. Hide them away, and exchange them every 2-3 weeks. That will make the toys seem "new". Seriously, Scali runs toward the toys when we bring them back out! :)
-Seriously... do not leave Da Bird unattended. It will not survive.
-If you have a krinkly tunnel, put it away at night, otherwise you'll be waking up to some serious noise.
-If your cat doesn't enjoy chasing or hunting toys, try making it more believable: cats like things that run horizontally across their line of vision, they also like things that vary speed (run fast, stop, run slow, stop, etc.). This really gets our cats excited to play. Even cats I know who aren't into playing love it!
Behavioral Resources:
This book, has been a lifesaver. Some of the ideas related to how to feed them, how to play with them, etc. have been so so good for us. Cats are essentially wild animals, and they need to do things like hunt, be challenged, be in high places, etc. This book has given us a lot of ideas to include in our home and to make our kittens happier! (including some of the toys above!) This book is also great for beginners and long-time cat owners alike when it comes to things like cat proofing, health info, etc.
Bonus Tip!
If your cats like to crawl around in your box springs at night... get another fitted sheet and put it on the bottom of the bed. Blew. My. Mind. :O
There you have it, lots of cat photos and our entire list of things we and our furry ones love!
Do you have pets? Do they have foods/toys/etc. that they just LOVE?!
Any cat tips?!
XO,
Alexandra

Festive Fall Happenings // 2016
Happy Monday friends!
This weekend we decided to take it easy as far as planning went and get some things done around the house. :) We cleaned out the closet and hung up so many pieces of clothing that have been folded or draped around the room....! -yess! I also found a lot more things for my donate pile!
We also went out to get pumpkins, costume pieces, and made time to carve our pumpkins. On Sunday we went to a Kansas City Chiefs game. I had never been to an NFL game, and I surprised KC with tickets a little while back - to say thanks for being the best ever. It was a little bit of a rough experience for me, but KC said he had fun, and I guess either way I tried something new. Maybe if we go again someday we'll know what to do, and what not to do!
We got home, and I felt like I had spent the whole day at a theme park. Hot, dusty, face felt like it had been sunburnt... and I just passed out and took a two hour nap. When I woke up KC was making dinner, and had done almost all of the dishes. He even vacuumed later. #dreamboat
Last year... I am not even sure we bought pumpkins... so I'm feeling good about where we are pre-Halloween this year! I'm sure I'll have more to post after Halloween, but I thought I would do a short Monday post this week with a few photos from our weekend.
This week is fairly light in plans... by which I mean, KC has two guy nights, and I have dinner with a friend. Excited for our Halloween Party on Sunday night. :)
A Few Links:
5 Steps to an AMAZING (& Cheap) Costume, Last Minute too! It's not too late! :)
Vintage and Indie meet in this Halloween playlist, *spook ! (6 hours long..... mildly more than anyone should ever need... but.... )
Halloween Movie Night Picks for the Kiddos, and the Scaredy Cats (*raises hand!*) A selection of fun costume-y movies, perfect for the occasion.
More Halloween Movie Night Picks, of the witchy and spooky variety. Or perhaps you want to start Witches of East End and watch it non-stop through the weekend? No judgement here.
Or you know, maybe you just want some Pumpkin Waffles... and Gilmore Girls... ? THE REVIVAL IS SO SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What have you guys been up to?!
Do you have any fun plans for Halloween?!

Duchess & Scalawag // Cat Lady
Today's post is just a fun one. Prompted by the fact that my least favorite part of travel is leaving behind our kittens. So this post is an intro / re-intro of our two little kitties. Mostly because I'm on vacation and I miss those little nuggets. How sweet are they?!?!?!
Duchess
Duchess is the first pet we got. She's a ginger tabby and got her name because she sat up so regally (like Duchess from Aristocats) when we met her. A lot of people who come to our house think she's mean, but she just doesn't have patience for people holding her upside down. She's really a big softy and very cuddly and playful when she feels at ease. She had an extreme excess of energy when we had just her, so we got her a little brother to play with. She's really athletic, and loves it when people toss pieces of her food in the air for her to catch. She will catch them in between her toes and eat them. It's so funny.
Scalawag
Scalawag was being fostered by my parent's neighbors around the time we were looking for another kitten. During his time being fostered he was taken back to the Humane Society to be adopted, when a sick kitten was put in with him and one of his siblings. They both got sick and were pulled back into the foster house. His sister got better, but his eyes wouldn't heal. The vet took out one eye in hopes that it would allow the other to heal. It worked, and it's given him a dapper permanent wink. Hence the pirate name, and the skull and cross bones ID tag. :) Scali quickly took to Duchess and he rules the roost now. They fight and play, and cuddle. They are reluctant BFFs. It's easy to forget that he only has one eye, he's very well adjusted! :)
We love these two feisty things, and are so grateful that we have good people around who are willing and able to watch them when we are gone.
Excited to be back home to them soon!
Anybody else hate leaving their pets behind when they travel?
Anyone else have cats?!? Or dogs, I like dogs too. :)

Meet Scalawag // Black & White Beauty
Today The Creative Closet is linking up 'Black & White Beauty' looks. So I thought, what better time to introduce our new, black and white kitten, Scalawag?! Well, briefly before the outfit post anyhow. :)
He is 6 months old, has a sweet little wink, and a big, cuddly personality. We adopted him a little over a week ago, and he is adjusting to our apartment (read: Duchess) pretty well. :)
They cuddle a little, and play pretty rough. But it's sweet, and I think she will be very glad she has a friend someday soon! :) - I could say more, and I probably will later.... but for now.....
....on to the fashion part! :)
Since I'm introducing Scali... why not keep it cat themed? I thought I would use these old pictures from my very first fashion post, 'Black Cat'.
I love this look. It's really simple and clean. The leather tights, black and white oxfords, and printed scarf keep it from being too basic though!

National Cat Day // 2014
Happy National Cat Day everyone! - I always forget this is a thing... but what a happy holiday right?
To add another sweet cat to the interwebs today, here is a collage of Duchess!

She is still a bookworm. She has grown like a weed, I have never seen a female cat so large. She is becoming more tolerant and friendly, but she still has a bit of a temper... As you can see she has also taken to board games quite well. :)

Duchess Turns 1!
Happy Birthday Baby Cat!
You are fiesty, curious, silly and sometimes cuddly.
Your favorite toy is a rubber band and you've got some serious prowling skills.
I hope you learn to scratch and bite less.
Here's to many more wacky years together! :)
This *birthday* hat... looks like an elf hat or something. Poor kitten... I'm that cat mom.... : /

Snapshots of Our Belated Thanksgiving :) // 2013
Despite being at home for 5 straight days on some heavy cough medicine, our Thanksgiving break ended up being pretty nice. :)
We spent lots of time cuddling and watching Christmas movies, we put up our tree and started wrapping presents.
My family brought us Thanksgiving lunch on Thanksgiving and then Kyle's family brought us Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving. We even gave Duchess some turkey! She ate a few bites and proceeded to fall asleep for 6 or so hours.. and then didn't go back to it.
We did make ourselves a pumpkin pie... which we ended up finishing... let's be honest. I LOVE how easy pumpkin pies are to make! :)
We received our stocking names from his family's yearly drawing. And we are nearly DONE with all of our shopping! :)

On Sunday both of our families had a joint Thanksgiving so we could all be together and all have a 'real' Thanksgiving, which was so so so nice! It was great to get out of the house and see everyone. And it had been such a long time since both of our families were together!

Kyle and I made pumpkin pies and homemade cranberry sauce! The cranberry sauce was SO delicious! And Kyle should take most of the credit for the actual cooking of it... :) We used this recipe, via Pinterest....and I tucked it away!

My sister showed up all ENGAGED!?!?! :) So... we had a lot to talk about!

I thought it was really fun that my mother-in-law put this turkey topper that we used to wrap her birthday present earlier in the month on top of one of her little Christmas trees for our Thanksgiving celebration! :) hehe
I went back to work today, and also found out that all of my lab results from my Dr. were negative! So I just had a nasty nasty virus, that is now mostly (I hope) gone! Luckily I did get a refill on my cough syrup since that isn't quite gone.
I also spent some time doing some Cyber Monday-ing. If you love 100 Percent Pure, hurry and check out their deals before midnight!!
How was your Thanksgiving?
Thank you for reading!

November

A normal November for me is filled with lots of cold air and gray skies while Coldplay's 'Rush of Blood to the Head' is playing in the background. Dreaming of holiday and family time in the coming weeks. Taking more than my fair share of cranberries at every holiday gathering. It's a magical time of year.
This November has been a little different. Our temperatures have been in flux between too warm for a coat and hovering right at freezing, I've had very little Coldplay playing. I'm making lists for the upcoming holidays because we've been so busy I feel like I'm already behind. I am now in the middle of my second cold for the month. I'll tell you, being a substitute teacher (especially at a preschool) is probably not the best job for someone so prone to getting sick as me.

But, in this time of being sick and busy, I'm finding myself focusing a lot on gratitude. I'm so grateful to have a job that I have to call in sick to. I'm grateful to have a kitten that eventually stops attacking things in the room and cuddles with me while I rest. Grateful that daytime TV consists of hours of Boy Meets World and cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies. Grateful for instant hot chocolate, real fruit pop sickles, chicken soup and cough drops, which are currently my 4 food groups. Grateful for my wonderful husband who keeps me stocked with my aforementioned foodstuffs, nyquil, humidifier, cuddles, slippers, real food, love and countless other things I need and want. :)
I am also grateful for what it feels like to be well again and knowing that it should be coming soon. Grateful for the upcoming holidays and the pies I get to make to share with my loved ones. Grateful for family traditions both old and new. And those cranberries...
So apologies for the lack of posts, but at least some semi-seasonal ones will hopefully be on their way before the month is out.
Hope you are all having a lovely November!
