The Roaring Swinging Groovy Fabulous Wrap Up!

Whew, it is DECEMBER! That means that Audrey and I are here to recap our year of #RSFGBlogCollab - this is still a mouthful. hehe

We could not decide how we wanted to format this post, but we ended up thinking we'd do a section on "best of the best" aka essential reading/watching, "Through the Ages" aka other period dramas we love, and "On Deck" - stuff we are *still* dying to read or watch! (or maybe even more-so after all of this talk.

Here we go, on to my lists -- make sure to check out Audrey's here! - Make sure to link up with us if you want to share your favorite period dramas!

Best of The Best

To Read:
Anne of Green Gables (190os) - Check out my post about Anne, here.
The Tumbling Turner Sisters (1910s) - vaudeville, so fun!
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty (1920s) - Check out my thoughts on this one for SUYB next week! Spoiler: I loooved it! - I think this is being made into a movie!!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schafer (1940s) - loved this!
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (1960s) (one of my all-time favorite books)
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (1960s)
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding (1990s) - pure genius!

To Watch:

When Calls the Heart (1910s) - TV - I love mounty Jack. *swoon* (1910s)
Sweet Land (1910s) (movie) - cute!
Florence Foster Jenkins (1940s) - SO FUNNY and heartbreaking
**Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - TV - THE BEST SHOW EVER, GO WATCH IT! - movie just wrapped filming! Squee!)
Anastasia - all time favorite (obviously) (1910s-1920s)
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - I adore this movie! (1920s)
Paper Moon (1930s)- 5 Stars! - Possible father/daughter con team sell bibles in Kansas. A
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (movie) (1940s) - this movie exceeded my expectations and was SO gorgeous!
Call the Midwife (BBC) (1950s-1960s) - This is my go-to Netflix show. It follows the midwives in London's East End. The show starts in the 1950s, and is still coming out on BBC. I think it is in the mid to late 1960's now. I have a little catching up to do.. but I think I've seen about 5 seasons. This show while very real and emotional... is very heartwarming for me. It's still good for my mental diet! Babies, nuns, people rising above it. A gem you guys, watch this. But be ready to sob.
Stranger Things (1980s) - I fought watching this so hard. I don't like the 1980's, I don't love sci-fi. I did love this show. A lot. It's very very well done and it didn't matter at all that it wasn't right up my alley. :) Who is your favorite character?! Mine is Lucas. :)
Gilmore Girls (TV) (2000s) - forever, but I'll always be grumpy over that reboot.
The Holiday (2000s) - my favorite Christmas movie

Roaring, Swinging, Fabulous, Groovy Blog Collaboration // The Aughts

Happy Tuesday, Friends! I'm super busy at a work event this week... but at least we had a relaxing weekend at KC's grandparent's farm! #lybholidayl is well under way, if you missed that announcement last week!!

On the first Tuesday of the month, February through November, we're highlighting books & films from/about specific eras that we recommend! (Television shows, too, sometimes!) There's no commitment or link-up during those months on your end, but in December we’ll host a recap/link-up for the entire year!

Let's talk about the aughts. Who didn't love the aughts? I loved them dearly, and have just as much nostalgia for them as I do the 90s! Let's get into it! Don't forget to check out Audrey's post!

Jinx by Margaret Wild - I don't remember much about it other than it spoke to my 14 year old soul. I think it was written in verse-ish? Unless I'm mixing it up with another book. I'd like to re-read just to see what I think now.
Holes by Louis Sachar - technically written in 1998, but I read it in 2000 and adored it. The movie was cute too.
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli - I remember adoring the quirky characters. I'd like to re-read this one too!

Twilight - bad, but still things to love nostalgia-wise. It's problematic, but I've got some memories.

Bridget Jones's Diary - essential watching
13 Going on 30 - "thirty flirty and thriving"
Love Actually - "and he's got a big knobbbb" lolol
A Walk to Remember - sobbing forever, swooning forever
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days - "does princess sophia want to come out and play?"
The Holiday - my favorite Christmas movie
Legally Blonde - "what like it's hard?!"

Gilmore Girls (TV) - forever, but I'll always be grumpy over that reboot.
Veronica Mars - so clever
Everwood - I love everything about this show, other than it got cancelled.
Lizzie McGuire - "uh!"
As Told by Ginger - my favorite cartoon!
Braceface - god, I loved this show...

The O.C. - I'd like to finish it!

The aughts were aughtful great, don't you think. harrr.

Be sure to hope over to Audrey's post and check out her recommendations!

Next month we are linking up & we want you to join us!

Did you watch or read any of our suggestions from year? Maybe you thought of your own recommendations and you’ve been waiting for the right time to share them! Perhaps you just *happened* to read a book from the 1950s and you want to review it!

There’s no right or wrong way to link-up with us! Just do it! We will see you December 4th for our final Roaring Swinging Fabulous Groovy Blog Collaboration post!! Join us, won’t you?

Did you love the aughts?

Roaring, Swinging, Fabulous, Groovy Blog Collaboration // 1990's

Woohoo! It's linkup day! :) Today we're talking about the 1990's! The best decade! I loooove being a 90's baby! Make sure to hop on over and check out Audrey's blog too! :)

On the first Tuesday of the month, February through November, we're highlighting books & films from/about specific eras that we recommend! (Television shows, too, sometimes!) There's no commitment or link-up during those months on your end, but in December we’ll host a recap/link-up for the entire year!

Someday, Someday Maybe by Lauren Graham - funny story about an actress trying to make it big in the 90s.
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding - pure genius!
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell - currently reading. Internet security guy reads emails of coworkers and falls in love with one of the email writers.

Pretty Woman - a classic. Though obviously not a childhood favorite. ;)
Empire Records - overdue for a re-watch.
Never Been Kissed - I'm not Josie Grosie anymore. An all-time fave.
Romeo + Juliet - forever and ever and ever. Remember my love letter to Baz Luhrmann?

Seinfeld - on on repeat in my house growing up.
Boy Meets World - UNDAPANTS!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - *head bangs to theme song*
Full House - a staple. Does anyone watch Fuller House...? Cuz I do...
Dawson's Creek - *grabs hair in angst* Pacey & Joey 4 Eva.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch - All I wanted to be when I grew up. I have all the DVDs. Go ahead, judge me!

The Flood Girls by Richard Fifield (book) - thanks Dani for the recommendation!
Friends (TV) - yes I have seen some/a lot, but not all. Someday! :)

Be sure to hope over to Audrey’s blog and check out her recommendations!

Next month is our last month of recommendations! (HOW are we at the end already?!) We are diving head first into the first decade of the 2000s. The threat of global warming loomed larger, the War on Terror was born, and the world became obsessed with superhero films. Join us for a blast from the most recent decade.

Have you seen any of these?!

Alright... send me your best 90's recs! What am I missing?!??!?

Roaring, Swinging, Fabulous, Groovy Blog Collaboration // 1980's

Well... I was supposed to post my 1980s picks on Tuesday... but... I was lost in the long weekend and having a chance to finally get a little settled in our new place! :(

Anyhow, let's get into the linkup! Today we're talking about the 1980's!

Fittingly.. I have very few recommendations for the 1980s... ahha

I don't think I've read any books set in the 1980s! Send me your recommendations! :)

The Breakfast Club - one of my very very favorite movies in high school. I'm overdue for a re-watch. It was pretty pivotal for the time, and I still love it. So quoteable, so much empathy... I love it.

Stranger Things - I fought watching this so hard. I don't like the 1980's, I don't love sci-fi. I did love this show. A lot. It's very very well done and it didn't matter at all that it wasn't right up my alley. :) Who is your favorite character?! Mine is Lucas. :)

The Goldbergs (TV) - I don't know why, but I've always wanted to watch this. I'm not sure if I will ever get around to it... but maybe. I've always been a fan of Aly and AJ Michalka, and AJ is in this show, so that's probably why I've always thought about watching it.

Be sure to hope over to Audrey’s blog and check out her recommendations!
Obviously the 1990s is the greatest decade because we were born into this world ;) Just kidding! Next month we’ll dive into the 90s and explore some of the best books, movies, tv shows and more set in this decade! Dig out your scrunchies and overalls!

Have you seen any of these?!

Alright... send me your best 80's recs. Please note that I very very much dislike Footloose. It is what it is.

Alexandra

Roaring, Swinging, Fabulous, Groovy Blog Collaboration // 1970's

Howdy all. It's been another nutzo month around here. The newest development is that I lost all of my photos from our cruise... and all of our house pictures as we work on it. Unless a miracle occurs. Please send good vibes, prayers, whatever you do my way.

Anyhow, let's get into the linkup! Today we're talking about the 1970's!

I fully admit that I am not super into the 1970's. So I don't have a lot to share with you today, but I'm not giving up. haha

I guess I haven't read any books set in the 1970s.... *shrugs*

My Girl - a classic from my childhood!
Mama Mia: Here We Go Again -- lots of fun if you enjoyed the original. I looove Lily James, so it was fun to see her play young Donna. :)

There's a whole part of one of my fave shows (Witches of East End) that happens in the 1970s. We're going to call this good enough... lol!

Almost Famous (movie)
The Great Alone (book)
American Hustle (movie)

Be sure to hope over to Audrey’s blog and check out her recommendations!

Can you believe we’re already moonwalking our way into the 1980s next month?! Join us as we say goodbye to The Cold War, John Lennon, and Bob Marley, and say hello to leg warmers, heavy metal bands, and the Brat Pack!

Have you read or watched any of these?!

Roaring, Swinging, Fabulous, Groovy Blog Collaboration // 1950's

It's one of my favorite days! Audrey & I's Roaring, Swinging, Fabulous, Groovy Blog Collaboration! :) I was a mood-reader (again) this month, so I didn't get to any new titles. Boo. But oh well!

Today, Audrey and I are talking about the 1950's. MAKE SURE TO HOP ON OVER TO AUDREY'S BLOG TO CHECK OUT HER RECOMMENDATIONS! :)

Here we go:

On the first Tuesday of the month, February through November, we're highlighting books & films from/about specific eras that we recommend! (Television shows, too, sometimes!) There's no commitment or link-up during those months on your end, but in December we’ll host a recap/link-up for the entire year!

I'm learning a lot from this challenge already:

Books, Films, and Bonus will be things that I HAVE read or watched. "On Deck": will be things that I am hoping to get to soon!

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - I read this last year, and really enjoyed it.
Fahrenheit 451 - just read this... takes place sort of in the 1950's. Didn't really like it. Read about that next week for SUYB.
101 Dalmations - one of my very favorite books!

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights - No shame, I like this more than the original. It's more interesting to me... sorry... I said it! LOL
Great Balls of Fire - A movie about Jerry Lee Lewis, who marries his 13 year old cousin. Controversy! I did enjoy the sets though, it felt so 1950s! The scene where Winona Ryder goes shopping for their house is my favorite!
Edward Scissorhands - one of my all-time favorites.
Julie and Julia - Meryl Streep forever. :) This movie is so delightful!
Grease - my little sister, Olivia's favorite.
Snow Falling on Cedars - I saw this a very very long time ago.

Call the Midwife (BBC) - This is my go-to Netflix show.

I would also like to remind everyone of the fabulously silly episode of Gilmore Girls, "That Damn Donna Ried". Rory in all of her temporary housewife glory. Plus Apricot the kitten.

Walk the Line (movie)
Ray (movie)
My Week with Marilyn (movie)
Wonder Wheel (movie) - this looks sooo good!
Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepeyts (book) - great author, set in NOLA, must read.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (tv show)

What books, movies, or shows can you recommend that take place in the 1940's? Is there a goodreads equivalent for movies?!

Be sure to hope over to Audrey’s blog and check out her recommendations!

The 1960s was a time of revolution and political unrest. From the rise of the Vietnam war to the death of President John F. Kennedy to the birth or hippies, the 60s were quite the time to be alive! Join us next month for our entertainment recommendations from the era!

Enjoying this series? Check out the other posts:
1900s & 1910s

We are headed out on our cruise today!! So I'll be MIA for a little while, excited to catch up with y'all when we get back! Enjoy your week, friends! :)
