Have You Heard? // Kacey Musgraves - "Mele Kalikimaka"

Happy Friday Friends! Last night we went to see The Nutcracker at The Kauffman, which was so fun! :) I'm SO GLAD THAT IT IS THE WEEKEND, AND MY HOLIDAY "BREAK".**

I have really loved getting to know Kacey Musgraves's music this year, her Christmas album is super fun. I like that a lot of the songs have a vintage-y feel to them. I think this is one of my favorite tracks though it is hard to choose! :)

I really think that more people should cover this one, it is fun. :)

What are you guys doing this weekend?!

We have our Christmas party/game night with friends tomorrow evening which should be fun. We are doing breakfast food. YUM. Then Sunday we're not sure. Probably finishing up gift wrapping, driving around to see holiday lights, and possibly Jingle All the Way at our local theater. I've never seen it! :) Then it's Christmas Eve spent together, and Christmas spent with family. :)

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to you all!

And a HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

XO,

Alexandra

**let's not talk about how I will only have FIVE vacation hours come January 1st. :( Buying a house + two longer vacations = nada vacation. OY. : /

Have You Heard? // Pentatonix - "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" (N'sync Cover)

Helllo! It's been a long time since I've done a "Have You Heard". This has not been my blogging year. That's ok, I'll just keep moving forward.

When Pentatonix covers an N'sync Xmas song... you've gotta share it. :)

Anyone else still listen to 90s and aughtie xmas albums?!

What are you guys up to this weekend?!

We are watching DUMPLIN' on Netflix tonight! HOORAY! I am so so so excited! Tomorrow we have a Hanukkah party this afternoon and early evening, and then a Christmas party with some of KC's former coworkers after that. Sunday is a dinner with my girlfriends. We're giving belated gifts to Jessica who's bday was last week!

I hope that you have a great weekend!

XO,

Alexandra

Christmas Fiction 2018 // Vol. II

Happy Monday, Friends! You all know that I looove a good fluffy holiday read... Here are a few that I've read so far this year! Check out my reviews so you don't pick up a dud! I will probably have a Volume III coming sometime soon! :) (I know this is not everyone's genre, so I wanted to share it in a separate post from my normal monthly reads!) Missed Volume I? Check it out now! :)

A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews* (this is a novella!) - Publishes TOMORROW!

5 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy Christmas fiction and/or proper romance. It gave me Edenbrooke feels!

Sophie Appersett is the logical minded daughter of a frivolous man of society. He's spent her dowry, and what's left of the family fortune is dedicated to improving her sister's chances at a wealthy match. When Edward Sharpe asks to court Sophie, her parents are thrilled, though he's not a man of society, he is quite wealthy. Sophie, dedicated to her family's success agrees to court Edward. However, he never speaks, and doesn't seem to like her much at all. When she breaks off their courtship she quickly realizes that she may have liked him more than she thought. Only a Christmas holiday in the country will tell if these two are suited or not.

HOW. GORGEOUS. IS. THIS. COVER?!?!?!

I absolutely adored this novella. It was everything I like in a historical proper romance: bantery, swoony, slow burn, and featuring an independent and intelligent female lead! I loved that Edward and Sophie had such good banter, and that they were occasionally grumpy with each other... though I would not classify this as a hate-to-love type of relationship. I loved all of the Christmassy elements involved in this book, but to see how it fit the Victorian period. How fun to imagine searching the grounds for holly, greenery, a yule log, and mistletoe, having a Christmas ball, or sleigh rides. There were so many parts of this book that were just too darn swoony. I could not even. BRB, adding all Mimi Matthews books to my TBR. -This book publishes TODAY!-

Dear Santa by Nancy Niagle* - on sale now!

2.5-3 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy feel-good Christmas fiction. Particularly of the Hallmark-y variety.

Angela has owned Heart of Christmas since her grandmother passed away. The lighthouse where the shop is housed has been in her family for over 100 years, and the store is her life. When Christmas Galore a big chain store moves in, Angela's business is threatened. What will she do without her career and her last connection to her grandmother. Geoff is the head of Christmas Galore and reluctant to get involved in the newest community that his store is located in. When his mother, and business partner falls ill he must take over some of her duties, including becoming more involved in the community. Angela and Geoff are rivals, but just might find that they are both looking for the same thing.

This book started out a little bit slow for me, I didn't care for the arguing between the two sisters, but as the story went on I liked it more. I appreciated how detailed the town, characters, etc. were. With Christmas fiction there is a tendency to really simplify the setting and characters, I didn't find that in this book, which I appreciated. I felt like the letters to Santa in the app was really quite a small part of the story, it would have been fun if it took over a little bit more. Overall I ended up liking where the story went and the budding relationship between rivals Angela and Geoff. I could have done with a bit more banter, and a bit more romance. Overall I think you will enjoy this if you like Hallmark Christmas movies. HIGHLIGHT FOR SPOILER: Not even a kiss?!

The White Christmas Inn by Colleen Wright* - on sale now!

4-4.5 Stars - I would definitely recommend if you enjoy Christmas fiction. Also, if you like a romance or story where there are many characters's plots happening at once.

10 years ago Jeanne and Tim bought The Evergreen Inn from Iris, who grew up there. Iris allowed it, only if she got to stay on to work the front desk. After 10 years in business, the inn is going under due to a new ski resort in the area. Christmas week is going to be their last days in business. Hannah is about to get married at the inn, a place she spent her childhood, when her fiance calls the whole thing off. Molly, a children's book writer is seeking inspiration for her newest book, and her life and decides to stay at the inn too. When a bad storm causes an elderly gentleman and a single dad and his two girls to take refuge at the inn, they'll have an unusual Christmas that will never be forgotten.

I didn't know what to expect from this book. It was the author's debut, but the cover image drew me in. I'm so glad that I took a chance on a new book and author! This book has all of the charm of a Hallmark movie but with the changing perspectives of a (more PG) Love Actually, mixed with The Dragonfly Inn in Gilmore Girls. I loved the description of the inn, the quirky characters, and their sweet interactions. I loved seeing how empty-nesters, a single dad of two girls, struggling business owners, single elderly folks, a young wilderness guide, a jilted bride, and a children's author join together to celebrate Christmas. I think that Molly (the children's writer) was my favorite character, I was most excited to see what would happen with her plot. The only thing I would add to this book would be an epilogue. :)

Christmas In Snowfall by Erika Marks* - on sale now!

3.5 Stars - I would recommend if you are looking for a cute Christmas novella.

Maggie Iverson is a web designer, tasked with improving the website and tourism for the quaint town of Snowfall, VT. When Maggie meets Alden Marshall, the town vet, and finds out the he is tied to a town curse, she is hoping he'll share the story with her. Neither is looking for romance, but as Maggie falls for Snowfall, it's hard not to fall for Alden as well.

This was a cute Christmas novella. I enjoyed the town of snowfall, the plot, and the fun dates that the characters went on. I feel like I could have gone for pages and pages more of Maggie and Alden exploring Snowfall, and of Ezzie's (the innkeeper) matchmaking schemes. I felt like the characters were a little bit angsty over small things, which made it feel a little heavier than I wanted it to. Overall I would recommend this book to someone looking for something Christmassy.

There you have it! Four (more!) 2018 Christmas releases that are on shelves now, or very soon! Check out Volume I for more good 2018 Xmas Picks! Volume III headed your way soon!

Christmas Fiction 2018 // Vol. I

H-h-happy fall! Because the world is crazy and delightful... Christmas books are publishing right about now! You all know that I looove a good fluffy holiday read... Here are a few that I've read so far this year! Check out my reviews so you don't pick up a dud! I will probably have a Volume II coming next month! :) (I know this is not everyone's genre, so I wanted to share it in a separate post from my normal monthly reads!)

Santa's On His Way by Various Authors* - publishes September 25th, 2018

Overall 3 Stars - I might recommend if you enjoy Christmas fiction and short stories.

What the Cowboy Wants for Christmas by Maisey Yates - 3 Stars - Foster siblings Meg, Noah, and Charlie have a complicated relationship. Meg has always loved Charlie, Charlie has always loved himself, and Noah has always loved Meg, but she doesn't know it. When Meg flies to meet Charlie for Christmas and finds him with another woman she runs back to her best friend, Noah. What once was platonic has shifted, and when she gets snowed in at his house, things are bound to change.

Overall I liked this story, it was a little bit angsty as only stories with characters who have tortured pasts can be. This was quite R-rated, which I wasn't expected and ended up being (by far) the most explicit story in the bunch. I overall enjoyed it, but it was very much a competition between the two men, everything was a comparison... which I didn't love. This story was also not overly Christmassy... which isn't my preference for a Christmas book. Also, he owns a ranch... but it's almost never mentioned. I feel like putting Cowboy in the title is just using a buzzword. I liked the epilogue in this one!

Snowed In by Staci Finz- 2.5 Stars - Rachel and Boden own restaurants in a ski resort town, they are both bidding on a large river-front property to expand their businesses, but only one can win. Rachel has been hurt by men before and steers clear of them, Boden has had a thing for her since the beginning... but they but heads at every turn. When they cater a wedding together and get snowed in at the location, all bets are off.

I didn't really love this story, because I didn't really like the characters very much. I felt like the characters didn't have a ton of witty banter that I've come to love from hate-to-love romances. The premise was cute, and it was alright to read, but definitely not my favorite in the bunch. I liked the ending and the epilogue as well.

A Cowboy Wedding for Christmas by Nicole Helm - 4 Stars - Lindsay and Cal were high school sweethearts. When Lindsay left for college and to find her own way in the world, Cal took it as another betrayal, just like each of his moms leaving him. When Lindsay's brother gets married at Cal's Christmas tree farm, he finds out she's back for good. But can he trust her not to leave again?

This was my favorite of the bunch. I liked that it was very Christamassy, I felt like there was a bit more depth to the characters, and I loved the family dynamics in this story. I liked this epilogue as well!

A Baby for Christmas by Lisa Jackson - 3 Stars - Annie always wanted a baby, but her infertility instead became the death of her marriage. Her sister is her opposite in every way, flitting from town to town, man to man, and job to job. When a baby is left on Annie's porch, and one of her sister's exes comes asking about his baby she knows she has to do whatever it takes to keep the baby.

This felt a little bit dated. It was set in the 1990s which could have added to that just a bit. I didn't particularly relate to the characters, and I felt like the instalove was a little bit extreme. In the end I enjoyed parts of it, and didn't enjoy other parts. It was alright. There was one unfortunate paragraph where they go immediately from talking about making love to cleaning out gutters that just sounded sooo wrong. LOL

Rescued by Christmas by Erika Marks* - publishes September 25th, 2018

4 Stars - I definitely recommend if you enjoy contemporary Christmas fiction.

When pop star Jackson Wilder crashes his Range Rover in the mountains on his way to a week of solitude, he limps through the storm to a lit up barn. In the morning he's discovered by a little boy, Ollie, who thinks that Jackson is Santa Claus... because he happens to be dressed up as Santa Claus. Miranda, the Ollie's mom, is terrified that there is a stranger in her barn, but quickly realizes that Jackson doesn't pose a threat to their family. As a vet, she takes care of his wounds and lets him camp out in their barn apartment. When the little boy asks Santa to heal their dying horse, Jackson has to stick around and keep up the charade.... and quickly realizes that he doesn't mind doing so.

This is quintessential Christmas fiction for me. It was cute, fluffy, and had a lot of Christmassy activities in it. I loved Jackson and Miranda, they were cautious but hopeful in a way that only fluffy books can pull off, and Ollie was the cutest. I loved all of Ollie's very kiddo questions, and the fun that he brought to the book. I loved that Miranda was a vet, and the horse rescue element of the book as well.  All of the cozy family meals, decorating the tree, sledding, etc. definitely put me in the holiday spirit. This had romance in it, but it wasn't overly romantic which worked out well with the family aspect. Definitely PG. :) Basically this is exactly the kind of book I am looking for when I pick up a Christmas novel. Definitely recommend if you enjoy Christmas fiction!

Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan* - publishes September 25th, 2018

4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy contemporary Christmas fiction and stories of family dynamics and drama.

When Posy, Hannah, and Beth's parents die in a tragic avalanche they are taken in by their mom's best friend Suzanne. Every Christmas they are haunted by the tragedy, so Suzanne tries to make it the best Christmas ever each year. This year Posy is wishing she didn't feel obligated to stay in Scotland with Suzanne and her husband, Beth is wanting to go back to work while her husband wants her to have another baby, and Hannah is pregnant and not happy about it. Will they be able to have a happy Christmas amidst the chaos?

Isn't this cover pretty?! Le swoon!

Due to the subject matter, at times this book was heavier than I wanted a Christmas book to be. There was a lot of PTSD for the characters, and a lot of insecurities due to their upbringing, etc. I had to take some breaks in between, but eventually it got more toward the current family drama and the holidays which was better. I could identify with each of the people in the book which was nice, and at times a little too close to home. Once they all got together for Christmas the warm fuzzy, and less isolating drama occurred and that was better for me. I loved the family dynamics and their struggles. About 3/4 the way through a little twist happened that stirred things up and I loved it. I also loved how the sisters opened up to one another and talked about their deep rooted fears and issues. It made me really emotional from time to time. While this had romance in it, it was much more of a family drama. I was surprised by how much I ended up liking it. It won't be my last Sarah Morgan book!

Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber* - publishes October 2nd, 2018

3 Stars - I might recommend if you enjoy very fluffy contemporary Christmas fiction. This was not my favorite by Macomber by a long stretch.

Josie spends a summer working at a restaurant lodge in a remote Alaskan town. While she's there she falls in love with Palmer, a local blacksmith. He proposes, but her life and future are in Seattle as a chef. When she leaves she'll have to re-evaluate her life and her priorities. Can they make it work despite their very different worlds?

As with many Debbie Macomber books this one is fuzzy and a bit unrealistic, which is usually just what I'm looking for in a Christmas novel. While I enjoyed the story and the residents of the town of Ponder, AK this one felt a bit too stilted to me. I also didn't particularly care for the fact that the couple was already together when the story began, and it was more about how they would make it work. It made it seem like there wasn't any fun banter or chemistry, even though the characters were in love. I also felt like some of the characters were too over the top. I liked Jack a lot at first, but then he became so hysterical it wasn't really believable or that funny anymore. The epilogue was also pretty unbelievable.... even in a fantasy world the things that they all accomplished just went on and on. I won't spoil it, but it felt like too much. Not my favorite of Debbie Macomber's Christmas books, but I'll highly recommend Merry & Bright or Trading Christmas if you are looking for something a little more banter-y and slightly more realistic.

There you have it! Four 2018 Christmas releases that are on shelves now, or very soon! Volume II headed your way next month!

Christmassing 2017 // Playing Catch Up!

Whew, still a bit under the weather off and on. The worst part is that I can't see distance-wise anymore. And I have no idea why. I also get kind of dizzy and nauseated. I am headed back to the doctor today, and the eye doctor tomorrow to hopefully get it straightened out. Wish me luck! I am at the end of my rope with this "cold"!

In the meantime, I have a tiny surge of energy, and wanted to get some holiday photos up, even though I am very over Christmas, and I bet that you are too, I still want the memory of those things here. ;) This blog is for readers, and also for myself. I want to be able to look back on things that have happened in my life and have them all in one place. :)

We finally made Spritz cookies, and they were amazing! This family tradition is one that I loved as a child, and am grateful that KC enjoys too! :)

I sent my Blogger Pen Pal Secret Santa gift to Audrey. I wrapped it with foxes, because she loves them. :) I hope that she enjoyed the items and the wrapping. ;)

We watched more Christmas movies: Charlie Brown and The Grinch. We sadly, still did not get around to watching White Christmas and Christmas in Connecticut. Next year I should plan to watch them on the first weekend in December! hehe The cats were so snuggly for much of our movie watching.

KC and I spent Christmas Eve together, we exchanged most of our gifts, made "Christmas Fettuccine" ala The Holiday, and listened to The Holiday while playing with our gifts. KC got me a lovely old typewriter and I am having so much fun using it! :) We ended the night playing games, and having tea and cookies. It was perfect.

On Christmas morning the boys unwrapped sort of a funny present. Raccoon "Coon skin" caps. They aren't real. But it was too funny watching them start opening the package making a "what is in here?!?!" face. Scalawag has stolen KC's and plays with it. LOL. I thought this photo was too funny though.

My Mother in Law made us matching Christmas Sweaters again this year. This is the third year, and I know that you guys get a kick out of them! :) Two years ago we had reindeer shirts, last year it was penguins, and this year it was gingerbread people. :)

Some of my favorite gifts we gave this year were these two water color portraits. I had been wanting to try my hand at painting them for a while. I think that they turned out pretty cute! I put one in Audrey's SS package, but I forgot to take a picture. : / WHOOPS! There are a few things I would change on each, but I am learning and getting the hang of it. :)

Before I got sick, we played a lot of games, and read a lot. A LOT. Which was so lovely and so needed. I would have loved to have finished off the vacation this way, rather than in bed, but that's ok. I'm grateful I am not truly truly ill. I'm grateful that I enjoy reading, and that I was able to take time off of work! :)

Then I was obviously sick for quite a while, and I am running out of patience to feel better. :(

Last weekend we did get to celebrate a belated Christmas with my mom and sisters, which was nice. I felt bad for pushing it back, but I didn't want anyone to get my cold. It was nice to finally get to celebrate and to spend some family time together. We had breakfast, opened gifts, watched part of a movie, and made a small gingerbread village. Olivia spent a lot of time playing with her various crafty gifts she received. One thing we got her was a mini low-heat glue gun (and sticks) so that way she had one of her very own. :)

We still need to take down our decorations, but I am glad that we got to do our Christmas and finish up the season last weekend. I am more than ready to move on to 2018!!

I hope that you all had a lovely holiday and new year! I am planning to catch up on some recent posts... but there obviously hasn't been energy for that just yet!

Thank you for all of the well-wishes! :)

Alexandra

Have You Heard? // *Nsync - "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" // Throwback

OOoh yeah! To be real, I *wanted* to share Garth Brook's Christmas music, because KC and I both hilariously* grew up on listening to one of the albums. But you can't find it anywhere on YouTube OR Spotify. This is a travesty. (*hilarious because neither of us likes country music)

So instead, I found this absolutely throwback video that *Nsync posted that goes with their song, "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays". Dear lord this is the most '90's thing I've seen in a while. So much ramen-haired JT, so much orange, so many goggles, so much green screen. :P

Do yourselves a favor and watch this one.

What are you guys up to?!

For us we actually don't have anything until actual Christmas. So we are super excited to hang out together and do fun things, and relax a little! We've been swamped! I might get to finish a book, make progress on my album, etc. :) :)

If you celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas!

If you don't, Happy Holidays!

If you don't do any of that, I hope that you have a great weekend!

I'll be blogging a little, but no promises. I can't forget too many days in a row.... because New Year's Goals, y'all!

P.S. - if you are hoping to focus more on gratitude next year, please stop by my new blog project with my friend Rachel! It's called The Year of Gratitude, and we are super excited abou tit! How it works: Each week there will be a new prompt to either journal or reflect on. We'll write our responses throughout the week and then share a reader/guest writer response at the end of the week. We'll also be doing tiny moments of gratitude, etc. on Facebook on Instagram. The hope is to cultivate a little community for people who are trying to be more grateful. A place where we can share successes and failures, and do our best to focus on gratitude. If this sounds saccharine, or naive, please know that Rachel is the snark snark snarkiest. (said with so much love, and understanding. LOL) And has already written in an intro post that she "hates the word 'journey'". We've both had horrible times of 2017, and are living proof that trying to focus on gratitude helps. It's going to be quite the variety, and really awesome! :)

Festive Happenings // Pre-Christmas 2017

Whew, this month has been absolutely bonkers. I think that my plan of focusing on me and KC has been really hard to carry out. Every spare moment (and the not spare ones) have been taken up by projects, and work, and scheduling. Really hoping to get more time to ourselves next week, and I think taking the week off will be a big help too. Doing my best to focus on the great moments, even when there are lots of busy ones in between.

I still do not know why sometimes the IG photos embed correctly, and other times they don't... *shrugs*.

Here are a few things we've been up to:

I decorated my desk:

We had a few hot chocolate dates, and Scalawag played with a santa hat (scroll to second video):

We celebrated KC's grandpa's 85th birthday (sadly didn't get any family pictures):

We celebrated at our city's "Winter Wonder Weekend". We went to the Festival of Trees, The Old Fashioned Christmas Parade, and the Gingerbread Auction. Photo 8 in this post is my favorite tree. HOW FREAKING GORGEOUS IS THAT?!

We decorated our tiny tree with some of our decorations. :)

I started working on my December Daily album. Check out the first bits up on YouTube. I love the collection I am using, it has so many cute little animals in it! :)

We made a cute cake in our gingerbread house mold. It was very cute, but the recipe was not the best. It was kind of dense... but oh well! We also made a blanket fort and watched Love Actually and had Hotschnappslate! It was fun, and I was able to relax a little despite the to-do list. We actually fell asleep in our tent and were late to the party we were headed to!

I got my Secret Santa gift for the blogger pen pal group! Kelly was my SS and she got me the neatest things!! I love them all and have already started using the things! Fun Fact: It is the first blogger exchange where I have actually received the gift in return! Which sucks, but I am glad that it worked this time. haha

We drove around and saw some fun holiday lights! We didn't get very far, but found a lot of houses that went all out! :)

I made a Christmas card for a girl who is the daughter of someone in the December Daily FB group. She was being bullied at school and so she asked for people to send her cards. She likes unicorns, so I made her this fun card. I sent it off yesterday, so I really hope that she gets it soon and enjoys it! :) I have a video tutorial going up Friday on YouTube.

KC and I went to KCMO to see the Kansas City Ballet's performance of the Nutcracker. It was gorgeous again this year! My favorite party (by far) is the Waltz of the Snowflakes. It is so so beautiful. The snow falling, the pretty snowflake outfits. And the new KC ballet version is just so imaginative and gorgeous.

I'm hoping to add more things to our list and our downtime as Christmas week gets here. :)

What have you guys been up to?!

Does anyone else love The Nutcracker? What is your favorite part?!

DID YOU SEE THAT DISNEY IS MAKING A NUTCRACKER MOVIE?!? OMG!!!

Are you taking any time off at the end of the year?

Alexandra

Have You Heard? // Hilary Duff ft. Lil' Romeo - "Tell Me A Story" // Throwback // Yeah I Went There...

Happy Friday Friends! It has been the busiest week, but I managed to read a little bit!!!! WHICH IS SHOCKING AND AMAZING! :) On to the Christmas music...

When I was a kid I didn't have any Christmas albums, because who wants to use their Christmas money on a Christmas CD? The season is already over. But I finally got one, and it was the ONLY one I actually had! It was Hilary Duff, and it is perfect if you are looking for poptart throwback perfection.

There's a particularly great song with Lil' Romeo that was on The Disney Channel. Hilarious. "Thanks for the video games and the bling bling" is an actual lyric. hehehe It's worth checking out the partial music video too.. so I'm going to paste that below.

Anyone remember this? :P

There ya have it! A blast from (my) past. hehe

What are you guys up to this weekend?!

We are watching my sister do her dance routine during the basketball halftime show and driving around to look at holiday lights for #lybholidayl tonight. Tomorrow we hit the Festival of Nativities with KC's parents, and then shop with my sisters and mom. Hoping to finish up gifts then! Sunday we see the Nutcracker. Hoping for downtime inbetween. hahaha

Our Christmas Traditions & Advent Calendar // Christmas 2017

Today is our Winter Holiday Traditions & Advent Calendar Linkup! Please linkup any holiday traditions or Advent related posts that you have, below! :) These do not have to be Christmas posts, if you celebrate another holiday, or a secular tradition -- please share those as well! :)

When you start your own family, even in the two-person (or one person + furry family) sense, you have to start thinking about what you want your own holiday traditions to be. We have been married for almost seven years, so we are still pretty new at this, but we have started making new traditions of our own to make the holiday season special.

As family dynamics change, and what's important to you change, sometimes you have to change your traditions as well. - and I think that's ok! & important to remember!!

Something new we are trying this year is our Advent Calendar!

Advent Calendar 2017:

The What & Why: This year I wanted to do an Advent calendar. They always seem fun, KC's family used to do them when he was a kid, and as they got older they turned into "daily gifts"... so I thought it would be fun to give it a try on our own. I like how it turned out, but I'll admit that we've been really busy (not by choice, lol, not glorifying busy - I promise!)... and not doing the best at the activity portion of the calendar. But I think saving them for a free night/day is just fine. We're doing our best. ;)

The Theme: The theme I wanted to go for was "Christmas Around the World". I did a lot of research on holiday traditions across the globe, though admittedly most of them are from Europe... because it has a high Christian population. ;) It was an interesting project for a life-long-learner like me, and it has been fun for KC too. I think it would be fun to do multiple holidays/faiths/etc. in the future. :)

The DIY Process: I had a different idea initially, but it was going to be too time consuming. So I swapped that idea for making tiny envelopes with little cards in them. I used a small envelope template (that I'd never used before!), some leftover paper source paper from wedding invitations this year, typewriter style letter stamps, washi tape, and my 01 Sakura Micron Pen. :) I just spelled out the number with my stamps on the outside of each envelope, inserted the card, and sealed them off with washi tape. I hung them from the mantle with tiny clothespins and baker's twine. For the cards themselves, I wrote a fact on each card making sure to note where each tradition was from. I wrote the number and traced the outline of the country the fact was from on the front of each card. If there is an activity that goes with the tradition, I wrote that on the card as well. (like I said, we are behind on these... :P).

Overall it has been fun, and we've had some laughs. Though no time to cook the recipes or eat all the sweets I collected to go with it. heheh We're having fun with it though. :) I'm glad that the design itself is super simple. :)

Does anyone want to see a tutorial/specific things we've been doing? Let me know! :)

Our Winter Holiday Traditions:

At this time of year, KC and I celebrate Christmas. Most of our celebrations are rather secular, and we've been known to tag along at our friend Rachel's Chanukah celebrations as well... so it's kind of just whatever is happening on a given year. I also think it is a bit funny than plenty of Christmas traditions come from Pagan ones. So.. it all depends on how you look at it I suppose! :P

Giving back - angel tree, donations, etc.

Every year we like to pick an organization, or a specific person, etc. to give a monetary gift to. It's not a set amount, it's just whatever we can do or feel is best. Sometimes we do an angel tree, other times we donate bleach and paper towels to the animal shelter, we've given money to medical funds of people that we know, it just depends on the year... but giving back during the holidays is a tradition that we like to keep. :)

Spending Christmas Eve Just the Two of Us (& Our Cats.. :P)

We didn't actually end up doing this last year... but the idea is that Christmas Eve is for us. We can eat dinner together, cuddle up, watch a movie, hang out by the tree, unwrap presents, etc. Just the two of us. It's lovely, and I'm excited to get back to it this year. :) I think we are going to start having fettuccine too, because that's what they do in The Holiday and we think it is fun. :)  We also like to take a "famiy photo" with the cats. :P

Love Actually + Hot Schnaapslate

Along with The Holiday, Love Actually is one of our favorite Christmas movies. We started a tradition a few years ago to watch it and have Peppermint Hot Schnappslate. Yum. A favorite at our house.

Insanely Long Xmas Playlists

Whenever we go thrifting, (admittedly less often lately) we look for Christmas CDs. We have found some GEMS! We have so many fantastic '90's-'00's albums, but also classics, and brand new things as well. We found a mint condition Michael Buble. Anyhow, we load them all onto my laptop, and add a bit to it every year. We do buy new ones too or download them, that way we can shuffle and not get bored with the selection in the evenings as we wrap gifts, etc. Some of Our Must Listen to Albums: Celtic Woman (all of them!), Hayley Westenra, Christina Aguilera, Aly & AJ, the Nutcracker, Michael Buble, Pentatonix, Hilary Duff, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, other miscellaneous!

Making Spritz Cookies

Spritz Cookies are my favorite Christmas cookie. We grew up making them with my mom. I also love that they are small and can have sprinkles. ;) I've got a big love of sprinkles. KC and I have our own cookie press so we can make them every Christmas! :) Now if we can just find it this year... :P

Different Tree Decor Every Year (for now)

We have a mini tree since we've been living in apartments. It's about 3 foot tall, hehe, and we set it up on a table. Each year we decorate it differently. Sometimes we get new ornaments, sometimes we mix and match old sets together. It's fun to try something different! We likely won't continue this every year once we have a full-sized tree, but we'll see and it is fun for now! I'm actually hoping to donate our small tree, and start getting real ones. Artificial ones are 3xs (yikes) worse for the environment, so that's an easy switch to make. Also, how fun is the idea of going to the farm and picking one out?! Good photos ops, etc. :) Looking forward to it someday soon!

Must Watch Movies:

Our favorite Christmas movies are The Holiday and Love Actually. Beyond those two we both enjoy the Santa Clause, The Snowman, and The Grinch (animated version). We usually try to watch Christmas Vacation, Scrooged, and A Christmas Story too. Those are some of KC's family's favorites. I'd like to watch a few classic ones that I have as well like White Christmas and Christmas in Connecticut! :) For non-traditional movies I like Little Women and While You Were Sleeping!

Link Up Reminder: Holiday Traditions & Advent Calendars

It's a sad day. I read no books in November (or I did.. ONE.. but I talked about it in October). :( So, instead, today I've got for you a reminder that we are doing our Holiday Traditions & Advent Calendar Linkup tomorrow! Join Shea and I by linking up!

No matter what you celebrate or your family's traditions this month, we'd love to hear about it! Feel free to linkup old posts too. :)

Here are some ideas to get you rolling:
  • What are some of your favorite holiday memories?
  • What are some movies you have to watch each year?
  • How do you like to decorate your home for the holidays?
  • Are there certain foods that you associate with your winter holiday celebration or season?
  • Have you ever done daily gifts, an Advent calendar, or something similar?
  • What activities do you like to do with family and friends in the winter?
here's our silly xmas picture with our cats last year. LOLOLOL

Super excited to linkup with you all tomorrow! :)

Have You Heard? // Christina Aguilera - "Angels We Have Heard on High" // Throwback

Happy Friday Friends! I hope that you all had an excellent week! It's been nuts here, super busy. Hoping that this weekend I can play "catch up" a little! hahah (we'll see...)

I love Christmas music, and I love it (nearly) all! We have a huge playlist (400+ songs) and growing that we love to shuffle in the evenings around the house. Some of my favorites every year remain the '90's and '00's Christmas songs though. So much nostalgia! heheh

Christina's Christmas album is super fun to listen to, and totally filled with vocal flourishes, very '00's pop moments, etc. It's awesome, if you like that kind of thing. :) She recites the Lord's Prayer in the middle of "O Holy Night" - which is funny and also very '90's. heheh

This is one of my favorites! The end is absolutely nuts! :P

What is your favorite type of Christmas Music?

If you like '90's and '00's music too, check out this post which has some more of my favorites. :)

What are you up to this weekend?!

We are going to the Lindsey Stirling concert tonight, decorating a gingerbread house, and watching Darrick tomorrow night, and then doing some cooking/baking for Sunday night's game night with friends. :) In between those things I am hoping to "catch up" on some December Daily, Advent, and YouTube/Blog things! Have I mentioned that I have a bit too much on my plate... ? x_x

My Holiday Wish List 2017

I find as I get older, I definitely aim to celebrate the seasons and holidays in less and less material ways. I love that, and I definitely prefer presence over presents, and good memories and experiences too! All that said... I love a good gift, and I do have attachments to physical items as well. I've come to accept with minimalism trending about, that I'm just more of a collector, and that's ok! I tend to get some romantic idea in my head about the perfect place to wear a dress, or the perfect spot to put a trinket, or a past-life a vintage item may have had. :)

Here's my wish list for this year!

Specific Items:

Vintage Typewriter (specifications: either black or dark(er) greens, pre-1955, no major issues)
Rifle Paper Co. Books (I own Heidi and Alice and love them!)
Janet Hill Art, Cards, and Books - this print
Pretty scrapbook items or stationery (My go-to shops are: Rifle Paper Co., Paper Source, TJMaxx, Crate Paper, Pink Paislee, Studio Calico, and Maggie Holmes.) - I love this stamp.
Oval Lockets - this oval one - or this circular one

Anything With:

Maps - this map - this map
Crescent Moons - necklace
Swans
Celestial Prints - I love this phone case from 1Canoe2!

We NEED:

A new vacuum!! HELP, any recommendations?! Looking at this one, but haven't done a ton of research yet!

What is on your holiday wish list?

Do you have a vacuum recommendation?! Preferably one that works well with pet hair!! :)

Alexandra
